Thursday, August 16th, 2012 is my Loc-versary! The day I chopped
off all my chemically treated ("relaxed") hair and started locs.
And I haven't looked back. Nearly 9 years later. I am still
all-natural.
The thought of starting Curl Cave started mid-way through my loc
journey. I was looking to save a few dollars and went to a local
drug store. And purchased a product claiming to be loc'ing cream
for Black hair.
Well, I tried this product. And nearly went bald! As I discovered
that fateful night. As many Black women have learned. Black hair
care is rife with products that don't serve our needs.
Losing half my hair was traumatic. And since then I have spent
time researching Black hair care. And discovered that 70% of
products sold to Black women are toxic. As well as have
ingredients that should not be in our hair, like alcohol.
To make matters worse, traveling with Black hair is difficult and
expensive. Local retail chains across the globe don't have a
variety of products. And don't come in travel sizes. And when you
do find the product you love it can be frequently out of stock.
Never aligning to when you need to do your hair.
And shipping internationally? Nearly non-existent. So it is wasted
money to buy a large tub of a product. To then fill a travel-size
container and throw out the rest. As hotels don't provide options
for Black women.
